How to gain in understanding? ( Tamil translation attached)

Psalm 119 is a treasure. From that we can learn a lot of things. Here the Psalmist asks God to give him understanding ( Psalm 119:73) in the same Psalm later he says he gained in understanding (Psalm 119:104).

Many times we pray for gaining in understanding but without knowing the way to receive the same. Here the psalmist says learn his precepts, that will give the understanding.

I decided to find out the difference between precepts and commandments. Because in Psalm 119:73, he seeks understanding so that he can obey his commandments. But he says His precepts gave him understanding as per Psalm 119:104.

In the Bible, commandments are direct, authoritative orders or laws from God requiring obedience (e.g., "Thou shalt not..."), often focused on specific, external actions. Precepts are foundational, internal instructions or guiding principles that shape moral character

For instance most important commandments are two. The following Bible portion gives out that:

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

What is precepts?

Precepts are life lessons; lessons that we learn from testimonies in Bible that guide us to lead a proper life.

May God help us to get the understanding from the precepts in Bible.
