Why did they kill Jesus Christ?

Matthew 22: 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

Not knowing the scriptures proves to be fatal for the Jews in the times of Christ Jesus. That ended up keeping them in the wrong side of the history.

Why do I say so?

Many times I used to think it was better that I was a victim rather than the victimizer. Yes it may sound that I am adding mystery to a already murky statement.

Well, let me elaborate. First, in the bible it is mentioned, as per the understanding of Pilate, people gave Jesus un to the cross because of envy. (Matthew 27:18)

I am adding a derived understanding here. That is, they killed Him because they were ignorant about the fact that He was the Son of God. That happened mainly because they did not understand the scripture and had no revelation about it.

How do we know that?

In Luke 20:41-44 where Jesus talks about how God is called son of David. That was neither understood and responded with. In John 7:27, they say when Christ comes we will not know where from He comes but we know from where Jesus comes from. In another place, when Nicodemus questioned the pharisees he was countered with the statement as in John 7:52 ...no prophet will ever rise from Galilee.

So they did not understand the scripture well. It is understood that there are more than 300 prophecies that talked about Jesus Christ in old testament. Had they known them they would not have done what they did to Him. Well, in another perspective, it was the fulfillment of scripture that was perhaps the reason!

Dearly beloved not knowing the word of God became fatal for them, it may not be just for them; it should not become like that for us. Let us be careful that we better know the word of God(Bible) well.
